I SEE YOU Exhibition

For Rala Choi’s solo exhibition I SEE YOU, the spatial planning centres on a new structure within Layer11, a former industrial building in Seoul. Rather than subdividing the approximately 1,000-square-metre venue, the exhibition retains its scale, steel trusses and time-worn surfaces, using the arrangement of works and a single architectural intervention to guide movement and shape how visitors encounter the photographs.

In the first room, works of varying sizes and proportions are hung at different heights and densities, recalling the nineteenth-century Paris Salons. Individual images alternate with larger groupings, creating a rhythm of focused and collective viewing along the length of the space.

The second room centres on two independent curved structures that face one another like crouching bodies. Formed through the repetition of triangular plywood modules, their white outer surfaces provide a backdrop for the photographs, while the exposed OSB construction within reveals the process of fabrication. A passage between the two forms leads visitors into an enclosed space containing integrated seating, a film composed of Choi’s photographs, and music by composer Jian Lee. The folded walls frame each visitor’s view, creating a moment of solitude within the shared exhibition hall.
